Govt trying to break trade union movement

"The government's strategy at the moment is to push for a change in the terms of trade union recognition. This is because they know that people have been losing their jobs and they want to be able to ensure that they can keep the best workers for the job," says Simon Johnson, a Labour MP and chairman of Momentum, which organised the rally. "The Tories want to see the trade unions forced out of their jobs. It doesn't feel quite right on the surface, but they want to ensure that their campaign is supported by these unions."


Johnson is not alone in believing Labour will lose votes among the smaller trade union movement, but many say the fact it is being represented by trade unionists who are at odds with the government is deeply worrying. "There are trade unionists who are Labour ministers who will say and do everything to get trade union recognition which is not the case for Labour," says Johnson. "Labour would win if they stood alongside unions, but if Labour MPs were to stand as Labour trade unionists then I believe it would be very hard."

Johnson says trade unionists could support Corbyn because they are prepared to fight in the Labour party and the government will have a hard time winning support from those trade unionists who may be prepared to support Labour for reasons other than principle.

"It's the party that we should trust," says Johnson. "We are being led by a woman who has no experience whatsoever. We need a candidate who is ready to have faith in the party. There are too many trade unionists who will never support Labour and who don't believe there's anything in the party that can be done to help their situation."


Anita Ashworth, a former leader of Unite, also believes there is a risk Labour may lose the support of trade unionist members when it comes to Labour's policy priorities, particularly with trade unions who have expressed a willingness to fight against any reforms that the government tries to implement.


"A lot of trade unionists are worried about the government's plans but I think there are some trade union leaders who are nervous that a Labour government will be very unlikely to do the things the trade union leadership want to see in their jobs," says Ashworth.
